Sprouting Growth in the Community

Joppa Lodge #315 is representing the masonic fraternity and has a new project growing at The Boys & Girls Club of the Great Lakes Region in Bay City. A special thanks to Home Depot in Bay City, Keit’s Greenhouse and the support of Mason Shawn Sexton with his time and labor.

This is very exciting for the kids, they will learn skills that schools do not teach. Learning how to grow fruits, vegetables, and spices, which is invaluable for anyone to know. With hands on teaching these kids will get to be outdoors and learn to have a great appreciation for nature. What they sow they will reap, and the following harvest will provide them a lifetime use of knowledge.

In the planters they will have raspberries, grapes, different spices and herbs, and mint. Home Depot donated 12 perennial plants so the kids will have years of plants. Keit’s Greenhouse donated the raspberries and grapes. Also they now have installed a water collection tank hooked up to their gutter system for water to put on the plants. They will also be receiving a fire hose from the Bay City Fire Department so they will be able to use the Saginaw River to water the plants as well.
There will be classes held at the Boys & Girls Club with times coming soon and will be announced on the Mittens From Masons Facebook page.

Programs like this are only able to happen with volunteers and donations of time, money, or supplies by members of the community. If you are so compelled to help in any way with this project or the Mittens From Masons program which supplies cold weather gear to kids in the community please contact Shawn Sexton @ 989-992-2119 or email mittensforkids@yahoo.com.
